Liquid Crystals

nematic order

Liquid crystals are anisotropic fluids, in contrast to ordinary liquids possessing at least long range orientational order. They usually consist of rod-shaped particles and can exist either as low molar mass or as polymeric materials. The chains of liquid crystalline polymers can also be crosslinked. By this one results in liquid crystalline elastomers, materials with anisotropic, rubber elastic properties.
